Design Center inaugurated in Chennai

In a bold step towards technological innovation, Qualcomm technologies officially inaugurated its new design center in Chennai, a project announced earlier this year that represents a significant commitment to India's digital advancement. This event is accompanied by Indian university research program Qualcomm 6G launchedin perfect alignment with the Government of India's Bharat 6G Vision, which aims to promote academic excellence and leadership in emerging 6G technologies.

This new center represents a significant investment and underscores Qualcomm's commitment to India's digital advancement. Specializing in wireless connectivity solutions, the center will focus on innovation around Wi-Fi technologies and contribute to the research and development of global 5G mobile technology. This is expected to create employment opportunities for up to 1,600 skilled workers, in line with the government's 'Make in India' initiative.

Present at the inaugural ceremony were Cristiano Amon, Chairman and CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated, and Shri. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Communications and Electronics and Information Technology of India. Amon highlighted the critical importance of the Chennai hub, reiterated Qualcomm's commitment to India and recognized the growth opportunities the country offers thanks to its enabling environment for technological innovation and talent development.

This program, which expands Qualcomm's existing academic research initiative, supports selected faculty from renowned institutions such as IITs and IISc in their research on key 6G technologies. The first group includes 17 researchers who will receive approximately $1.02 million in funding over three years.

The program will take place in two phases and will include presentations on 6G from Qualcomm R&D leaders and regular workshops. The first phase involved soliciting research proposals from selected universities, while the second phase, spanning three years, will facilitate ongoing interaction between Qualcomm faculty, students and designated contacts.

Research focus

From more than 40 submissions, 17 proposals were selected, covering various areas such as Physical Layer (PHY), Physical/Medium Media Access Control Layer (PHY/MAC), MAC Layer, Upper Layers and Radio Frequency (RF). Research topics range from integration from AI/ML in 6G exploration to 6G communications and applications.

In addition to the 6G research program Qualcomm is leading initiatives to support the wireless ecosystem in Indiaincluding university scholarships, awards, scholarships and support for startups through programs such as the Qualcomm Design in India Challenge and the Qualcomm Semiconductor Mentorship Program.

In line with the Bharat 6G Vision, Qualcomm strives to discover innovative features and applications that meet the needs of Indian consumers and businesses while addressing global markets, thereby strengthening India's digital development and its status as a global technological superpower.
