India is working with authorities in Dhaka to monitor the evolving situation: MEA

India is in touch with the authorities in Dhaka to monitor the evolving situation in the country and hopes that normality will return soon so that trade, investment and other economic and strategic engagements can be pushed forward, said Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesman Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday.

“No update” on the future plans of the deposed Bangladeshi prime minister

He also said India had no news on the future plans of deposed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has sought refuge in India “for now” after fleeing her country on Monday following violent anti-government protests, an indication that New Delhi was not directly involved in her asylum claim in some other countries.

“We are in touch with the authorities in Dhaka. We have an evolving situation before us. As a close friend of the Bangladeshi people, we want the restoration of peace and stability in the country as soon as possible so that normal life can resume; so that all the things you have talked about (trade and investment) can be taken forward and we can advance the interests of the Bangladeshi people and our own interests,” Jaiswal said in response to media questions on the future of bilateral trade, investment and various ongoing infrastructure projects.

Hasina resigned on Monday and sought temporary refuge in India as violent protesters angered by her harsh handling of the student demonstration against job quotas descended on Dhaka from across the country and headed for her residence.

Student leaders then asked Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus to head an interim government to restore normality in the country. The interim government is due to take office on Thursday.

“It is the responsibility of every government to take responsibility for the welfare of all its citizens. We hope for an early restoration of law and order in Bangladesh. This is in the interest of both the country and the entire region,” Jaiswal said.

Responding to questions about the future plans of Hasina, who has sought temporary refuge in India, Jaiswal said the Ministry of External Affairs had no update on her plans and it was her job to take things forward. He said the same applies to other members of her contingent.

About minorities in Bangladesh

On the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, Jaiswal said India is closely monitoring the situation. “There are also reports that various initiatives have been taken by groups and organizations to ensure the protection and welfare of minorities.”

I would like to reiterate what the EAM said in Parliament: “We welcome these steps but of course remain deeply concerned until law and order are visibly restored,” he added.

India has solid trade and economic relations with Bangladesh. India's exports to Bangladesh stood at $11.1 billion in 2023-24, while imports were lower at $1.8 billion. Numerous Indian companies from sectors such as apparel, consumer goods, automobiles and personal care products operate in Bangladesh and are concerned about the future development in the country.
