India confirms first medal at the Women’s World Chess Championship for entry into the finals

Tania Sachdev defeated Meri Arabidze to win the second game for India and helped them reach the final of the FIDE World Chess Team Championship with a win over Georgia. India face Russia in the final after beating Ukraine 3-1. Mary Ann Gomes continued in good form, defeating Salome Melia on the fourth board to help India move into the semi-finals.

As in the quarter-finals, Gomes shared the honor with India’s victory after Lela Javakshivili beat Bhakti Kulkarni and Georgia was in the lead. India’s # 1 player D Harika (2511 rating), who played on the top board, drew with Nina Dzagnidze (2525 rating) in a short game of 14 strokes. R Vaishali, who was playing on the second board, shared the point with Nino Batsiahvili in 61 moves.

It was Gomes who shone again after beating Kazakhstan in both of his quarter-finals. She defeated Melia in a 55-stroke encounter when India drew 2-2.

India had previously beaten Kazakhstan 1.5: 0.5 in the quarter-finals on Thursday evening, with Gomes playing a crucial role.

In the second game, India’s number one Harika beat Zhansaya Abdumalik in the first table, while Gomes impressed with a win over Gulmira Dauletova.

In the second semifinals, the Russian regular won the first and second semifinals against Ukraine and moved on with a 3-1 win.
