India and Kuwait seek closer cooperation in trade, investment and technology

During the 6th round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between India and Kuwait on July 24, 2024, both sides decided to conduct a comprehensive review of their bilateral relations and agreed to strengthen their cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, health and education.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

“Both sides expressed satisfaction with the traditionally strong bilateral relations and agreed to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including political relations, regular high-level exchanges, trade and investment, education, technology, health, culture and people-to-people contacts,” the MEA said.

The Indian delegation to the FOC in Kuwait was led by Aseem R. Mahajan, Joint Secretary (Gulf) (JS), Ministry of External Affairs. Ambassador Sameeh Essa Johar Hayat, Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs (AFM), led the Kuwaiti delegation.

During his visit to Kuwait, Mahajan met with Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, they discussed new initiatives and ways to deepen the partnership between India and Kuwait.

Earlier, on July 23, 2024, he met with Ziyad Al-Najem, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Commerce. According to the MEA, they discussed ways to strengthen bilateral trade and investment cooperation, including increasing bilateral trade, diversifying the trade basket, deepening energy cooperation, and new initiatives in technology and fintech.

During his meeting with Tahani Rashid Al-Naseer, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Legal Affairs) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions focused on the speedy conclusion of ongoing negotiations on various agreements and memoranda of understanding.

The timely holding of the FOC as a continuation of the previous FOC in May 2023 is expected to give further impetus to bilateral relations, the MEA said. It was agreed to hold the next FOC in New Delhi at a mutually convenient time.
