Wipro founder Azim Premji donates Rs 7904 Cr to charity in 2019-20

Hyderabad: Wipro founder Azim Premji is India’s most generous person after donating Rs 7,904 crore to charity. According to the EdelGive Huran India Philanthropy List 2020, Azim Premji donated nearly 22 million rupees to Indians every day as the country witnessed the deadly second wave of Covid.

The data shows that the Bengaluru-based group pledged 1,125 billion rupees to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020. The Azim Premji Foundation donated 1,000 crore rupees, Wipro 100 crore rupees and Wipro Enterprises 25 crore rupees.

These are on top of Wipro’s annual CSR activities and the Azim Premji Foundation’s usual philanthropic spending. Over three years, the group has donated 9,143 billion rupees. Education and health remain their main reasons for donations.

Next up is Shiv Nadar from HCL – one of the richest in India. He has donated Rs 795 crores. Mukesh Ambani family has donated Rs 458 crore, Kumar Mangalam Birla and family Rs 276 crore. Three Infosys co-founders, Nandan Nilekani, S Gopalakrishnan and SD Shibulal, donated 159 Cr, Rs 50 Crore and Rs 32 Crore, respectively.

Over 90 Indian philanthropists donated near Rs 9324 crore. The donations were made from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 in cash or near-cash funds. A big donation cake went to education, followed by health care, disaster relief.

“The preferred thing for India’s top philanthropists has been education, although the fight against poverty has risen dramatically this year and has become the second most popular thing this year,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher of Hurun India.

EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2020 contains people who donated INR 5 crore or more during the reporting period. The young Binny Bansal, 37, the co-founder of Flipkart, was a surprising entry on the list. He donated Rs 5.2 crore to charity. The list of people who have donated more than 10 crores has increased 100 percent in the past two years.
