Viral Indian ice watermelon is commonly sold during Ramadan, this is the recipe – Indian watermelon ice cream has recently gone viral on social media as many people are interested in this fresh drink that serves as a fresh takjil during iftar.

One of the Indian watermelon ice cream vendors is Mulyanto (37), commonly called Mul, from Bojonggede, Bogor, West Java.

“This year we can only sell again because there are no restrictions,” Mul said on Wednesday (6/4/2022) as quoted by

Mul decided to start selling Indian watermelon ice cream because the videos and recipes were circulating on social media, especially YouTube.

“A lot of people buy it because it’s really refreshing,” Mul said.

He sells Indian watermelon ice cream in two flavors, original and special.

The original Indian watermelon ice cream is sold for Rp 5,000 per glass, while the special variant with milk and syrup is sold for Rp 8,000 per glass.

At first glance, the shape of Indian watermelon ice cream resembles commercially available shaved fruit ice cream.

The difference is that the original Indian watermelon ice cream uses a blend of black rock salt and Kewda.

Quoted from the Fine Dining Lovers site, black rock salt or commonly known as Himalayan black salt is volcanic rock salt produced in the Himalayan area.

Black salt contains sulfur compounds that give the salt a pungent smell and taste, so it also functions as a cooking spice.

While Kewda is an oil made from pandan leaf extract.

Quoted from, Kewda or Kewra is an aromatic oil used to flavor foods.

Kewda has a sweet taste and smells nice, it is used to mix Indian watermelon ice cream. If you want to make Indian watermelon ice cream, you can substitute black salt or kewda with similar ingredients.

This is because these two materials are rarely found in Indonesia.

Ingredients Indian Watermelon Ice Cream:

  • 200 grams of watermelon
  • Black rock salt to taste (optional, cannot be used)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kewda (can substitute pandan flavor or boiled pandan water)
  • 1 teaspoon dried mint leaves
  • Pomegranate syrup to taste (can be substituted with coco pandan syrup)

How to Make Indian Watermelon Ice Cream:

  1. Peel and seed the watermelon, cut the flesh of the watermelon and place in a large container.
  2. Add black salt, Kewda, and mint leaves, then stir until all ingredients are well combined.
  3. Place the watermelon ice cream ingredients in the freezer until half frozen, then pour the ice cream into a glass and top with a drizzle of pomegranate or coco pandan syrup when serving.
