US recession, Google will no longer hire Meta employees

Bisnis.comJAKARTA – The United States (US) is currently in danger of witnessing this recession economy, so some tech companies are starting to slow their hiring rate into next year.

Apple, a US tech maker valued at up to $3 trillion, plans to grow hiring and spending over the next year, according to a Bloomberg report cited by India Times on Wednesday (7/20/2022). slowing down its technology units in several areas.

Meanwhile, Apple will remain aggressive in 2023, launching VR reality headsets, which will be the first major new category since 2015. According to its latest annual report, Apple has around 154,000 full-time employees.

In addition to Apple, Google’s parent company Alphabet is also planning to reduce the hiring rate by next year. This policy was seen as one of the company’s efforts to address the potential US economic recession.

Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai told employees in an email sent Tuesday (12/7/2022) that the company will focus on recruiting engineering, technical and other key positions in 2022 and 2023.

“In the future we need to act more entrepreneurially, work with greater urgency and sharper focus. In some cases, that means consolidating overlapping investments and streamlining the process,” Pichai said.

Historically, Google has remained relatively immune to economic downturns in the technology sector. However, the internet giant stopped hiring after the financial crisis more than a decade ago.

Microsoft also previously announced a termination-of-employment (PHK) policy for about 1,800 employees. This policy was implemented amid a period of economic uncertainty that later affected a number of start-up companies.

As Bloomberg reports, Microsoft announced the adjustment of roles and business groups after the end of the fiscal year (as of June 30, 2022). This layoff policy reportedly affects 1 percent of all Microsoft employees, which is currently equivalent to 180,000 people. However, management has not specified which region or division this policy applies to.

“Today we are reducing a few positions in the company, in small numbers. Like all companies, we regularly assess business priorities and need to make structural adjustments,” Microsoft said.

Bloomberg also said Meta Platforms, which includes Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, will cut hiring targets for engineers by at least 30 percent this year, and warned all employees to prepare for a severe economic downturn.
