There are crocodiles who don’t like meat and prefer to eat rice

HUMAN SENSE – Sri Ananthapura Hindu Temple in the Kasaragod district of northern Kerala is in the spotlight as it is home to a vegetarian crocodile called ‘Babiya’ who has lived there for more than 70 years.

The appearance of a photo showing a large crocodile in the Lake Swamy Sri Ananthapadmanabha temple made international headlines last year and increased the popularity of the small Hindu temple.

In fact, this incident was one of the few times the giant reptile had previously entered the temple and spent most of its time due to the pond next to the shrine.

The crocodile is also waiting uniquely for the priests to bring him daily food, namely a vegetarian menu. If the priests believe, the crocodile Babiya lived only on rice during his time in the temple, which lasted more than seven decades.

Nobody really knows how Babiya ended up in a Kerala temple, but it’s been around for so long that everyone sees it as part of the scene.

In fact, the priests there claim that the reptile never tried to attack them and they consider it sacred.

“According to legend, a crocodile, later called Babiya, appeared in the temple pond in 1945, a few days after a British officer was mysteriously killed by an unknown animal. It is said that the officer shot a crocodile that was in the temple at the time, ”Mahalingeshwara Bhat, chairman of the temple’s board of directors, told The Indian Express.
