The US government is investing $3.1 billion in battery manufacturing to reduce dependence on China

In an effort to increase the United States’ energy independence and reduce its dependence on countries like China, the Joe Biden administration announced a $3.1 billion grant under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act to buy more batteries and components manufacture in America, strengthen domestic supply chains and create high-paying jobs.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) also announced $60 million to support second-life applications of batteries previously used to power electric vehicles and new material recycling processes in the supply chain.

More than 2.5 million plug-in electric vehicles were sold in the United States in March, including more than 800,000 since Biden took office.

“By putting the United States at the forefront to meet growing demand for advanced batteries, we will increase our competitiveness and electrify our transportation system,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm.

Battery costs have fallen by more than 90%, and since 2008 energy density and performance have risen rapidly, paving the way for an accelerated transition to zero-emission vehicles, the environment ministry said in a statement Monday night.

Domestic sourcing of critical materials used to manufacture lithium-ion batteries — such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite — “will avoid or mitigate supply chain disruptions and accelerate battery production in America to meet this demand and adoption.” support of electric vehicles”. he added.

Biden’s goal is for electric vehicles to make up half of US vehicle sales by 2030.

“For too long, other countries have outstripped the United States in funding new technologies. We are at a critical juncture in our competition to build the next generation of electric and battery-powered vehicles here in America,” said Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act commits more than $7 billion to strengthen the battery supply chain in the United States, which includes the production and recycling of essential minerals without reclamation or mining and the supply of materials for domestic manufacturing.
