The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ready to hold the flagship event of the Indonesian Conference on Digital Diplomacy (ICDD) on Tuesday, November 16. Representatives from 21 countries will take part in this conference.

ICDD is a continuation of a series of digital diplomacy-related activities by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Starting with the International Seminar on Digital Diplomacy: Beyond Social Media in Jakarta on July 12, 2018. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the Regional Conference on Digital Diplomacy (RCDD) 2019 in Jakarta, in which 10 ASEAN countries and six countries in Jakarta took part in the Asia Pacific region namely Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

With the topic “Unmasking Digital Diplomacy in the New Normal”, ICDD would like to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences and look for future opportunities for cooperation in the field of digital diplomacy between countries around the world. Especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the practice of digital diplomacy is increasingly needed worldwide.

Minister Retno Marsudi opened the climax of the ICDD event. In addition, representatives from 21 countries will present their experiences and thoughts on digital diplomacy for crisis management and digital diplomacy in welcoming opportunities in the new era.

ICDD will also be filled with four panels presenting experts in their field to discuss issues of digital diplomacy amid a pandemic, digital technology as an instrument of digital diplomacy, challenges and opportunities of digital diplomacy, and opportunities to collaborate in digital diplomacy Present and Future.

In the run-up to the grand event, there were a number of activities organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to increase public understanding and awareness of digital diplomacy and other related matters.

One of these activities, namely a photo exhibition on the subject of “Demasking Digital Diplomacy in The New Normal”, was officially opened on Saturday (November 13th) by Deputy Foreign Minister Mahendra Siregar. The photo exhibition, which will take place from 13.-16. November 2021, shows photos to document Indonesia’s diplomatic achievements as well as videos and photos of the infrastructure to support Indonesian diplomacy.

Mahendra said the government, through the State Department, was actively engaged in diplomatic efforts even during the COVID-19 pandemic. To adjust the situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is innovating by doing diplomacy over digital networks.

“The pandemic conditions that have ravaged the world for the past 2 years have resulted in country relations and diplomacy being conducted through digital platforms, but this does not diminish the importance and effectiveness of diplomacy. In the future, digital diplomacy will become a necessity and a new fact of international relations and diplomacy, “said Mahendra.

The opening of the exhibition was followed by a hybrid talk show “Building Public Awareness of Cyber Security” from Bali. This talk show aims to raise public awareness and knowledge of the importance of maintaining security when operating in cyberspace in order to avoid cyber threats and cyber attacks.

Rolliansyah commented that Indonesia, as the country with the largest internet users in Southeast Asia, will be overshadowed by the increasing number of cyberattacks in 2021. Therefore, he reminded that it is important for the public to be aware of cybersecurity.

“There is no absolute truth. All levels of society have an obligation to be mature and responsible by not reacting easily when interacting in cyberspace,” explained Rolliansyah.

Meanwhile, Harry Sufehmi discussed the challenges of spreading hoax in the information disclosure age. He stressed that hoax attacks can be anticipated by raising public awareness to seek credible information, to fully understand the information, and to ensure the truth before trusting any information.

“Cyber attacks on machines and people can be avoided by being skeptical and critical of information in cyberspace. Fighting hoax is not just a government duty, it’s society at large, ”Harry explained.
