SUNY Schenectady enters into new partnership with university in India

SCHENECTADY – SUNY Schenectady Student Trustee Dravid Seecharran is excited about the prospect of soaking up more of his Indian culture in an educational setting.

And a new partnership announced on Tuesday between the university and one in India will offer Seecharran, who is of Indian descent from Guyana, and his colleagues at home and abroad the opportunity to do so in everything from culinary arts to tourism to music .

Seecharan, 23, an aviation major who also serves in the U.S. Marine Corps, said it seems almost like a natural fit that the two schools would work together given the demographics in Schenectady and the region.

“Here at this college I’ve seen it work with other countries … and as part of India it’s a good connection,” he said, adding that the region has a lot of immigrants from Guyana and Asia. “The Indian people who come here would feel connected, feel at home.”

The President of SUNY Schenectady, Steady Moono, and Paul Dhinakaran, Chancellor and Co-Founder with his father of the Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences (KITT), officially signed a letter of intent between the two schools.

Karunya, a spiritual concept in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism among other religions, means mercy or compassion.

Moono said the international partnership is in line with the school’s mission.

“This ticks several boxes on our strategic plan – many voices, one cause,” he told the small crowd at Elston Hall.

In particular, he mentioned globalization, the promotion of enrollment and the school’s efforts towards diversity, equality and inclusion.

“I think it’s going to be a good partnership, a productive partnership and, frankly, a well-designed partnership,” said Moono.
Dhinakaran said he was “particularly impressed with the SUNY Schenectady culinary program and music program, and we look forward to a concerted effort to launch these programs”.

Thereafter, Moono said that he and Dhinakaran started discussing the idea after a colleague who works with international student programs introduced it, which sparked even clearer conversations between their representatives about what this partnership would look like.

“The next step is to really set the curriculum and also the international students from Karunya who will be coming here to figure out how this will work and all the logistics involved,” said Moono.

Dhinakaran also spoke about the two schools’ joint work on research projects.

“We have also made a lot of advances in biotechnology, food science, and technology and engineering, and of course we enjoy collaborative research with faculty and students and offer our laboratories and the Indian perspective for research.” Process, “added Dhinakaran. “We look forward to many beginnings and ultimately to caring for humanity through this mission.”
