TEMPO.CO, jakarta –India will make a COVID-19 booster vaccine available to all adults starting Sunday April 10, 2022 as the number of cases of the new virus in the country plummets.
As reported Aljazeera, This free third dose of vaccine is limited to front-line workers and those over 60 years of age. Those who are eligible can get it at state health centers.
India has administered 1.85 billion doses of vaccine to its 1.35 billion people. Of that, 82 percent is AstraZeneca’s vaccine, which is made domestically and is called Covishield.
India’s Health Ministry said those who took the second dose nine months ago were eligible for the booster shot. However, you need to pay and receive it in a private institution.
“An extra layer of security has been added,” Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in a Twitter post marking the decision.
The booster program began in January and is limited to frontline workers and the elderly with a total of 24 million doses.
Other vaccines used in India include the domestically developed Covaxin and Corbevax, and Russia’s Sputnik V.
As of March, India was considering injecting all eligible adults with a booster dose as infections develop in some countries. Because some Indians find it difficult to travel abroad without a third dose.
The South Asian nation has seen a sharp drop in coronavirus cases in recent weeks. The Ministry of Health reported around 1,100 cases last Friday.
India remains the third hardest-hit country in the world after the United States and Brazil. Since the pandemic began in January 2020, more than 521,000 people have died and at least 40 million have been infected across the country.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, at least 4,000 people are dying every day India between March and May last year according to official figures that are widely underestimated.
