IRIS will be launched on the sidelines of the United Nations International Climate Change Conference, COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland.
It is a joint initiative of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to promote resilient, sustainable and inclusive infrastructure development.
In his message, the Prime Minister recalled the government’s massive investment of around 11.7 billion rupees in the National Flood Protection Program.
He reiterated his call for access to international finance so that countries can strengthen their resilience to the devastating effects of climate change.
The Prime Minister said he welcomed the innovative mechanism of IRIS. Coupled with a climate finance approach better suited to countries most exposed to the effects of global warming, such as Mauritius, IRIS will enable SIDS to better reduce their vulnerability to natural disasters and increase their resilience.
