Olympics: India is thinking about 2036

What if the 2036 Olympics were held in India? The country is definitely “seriously considering” putting forward its candidacy to replace Paris, Los Angeles and Brisbane, where the next three editions will take place.

“It is the right time. (…) If India is in the news in all sectors, from manufacturing to services, then why not in sports? », said Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in an interview with the Times of India newspaper. The world's second most populous country hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982 as well as the 2010 Commonwealth Games, both in New Delhi. Who could be the host city in 14 years?

“Gujarat (Editor's note: the state in which the city is located) has repeatedly expressed its interest in hosting the Olympic Games, explains Anurag Thakur. You have the infrastructure. The minister said his government would consult the Indian Olympic Association and prepare a battle plan before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Mumbai next year. “The IOC session is a prestigious event for India and whatever steps are taken to apply to the IOA, the government will support it,” he continued.

Qatar also a candidate?

Possible competitors for the games include Indonesia and South Korea as well as Qatar, where the FIFA World Cup took place this year. Germany plans to launch a new Olympic bid despite strong domestic opposition. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it was in preliminary discussions with 10 cities but did not announce a timetable for awarding the host event in 2036.
