This week, IOC President Thomas Bach was in Mumbai, India, where he chaired a meeting of the IOC Executive Board (EB) as a prelude to the 141st IOC Session.
At its meeting on October 11-12, the EC discussed the upcoming editions of the Olympic Games, various Olympic institutional issues and made a number of decisions.
The unilateral decision of the Russian Olympic Committee of October 5, 2023 to include among its members the regional sports organizations that fall under the authority of the NOC of Ukraine (namely Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhia) constitutes a violation of the Olympic Charter because it undermines the territorial integrity of the NOC of Ukraine as recognized by the IOC under the Olympic Charter. Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (6×6) and squash are the five sports that the IOC EB has submitted to the IOC meeting additional sports for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28). These additional sports were proposed by the LA28 Organizing Committee exclusively for the edition of the Games and were examined by the Olympic Program Commission before being submitted to the European Commission (read press release here). Following the decision of the February 2022 IOC meeting to approve the inclusion of 28 sports in the initial sports program of the LA28 Olympic Games, the IOC Executive Board reviewed the status of three sports that were not part of this original program (namely weightlifting, boxes). and modern pentathlon). The EC noted the preliminary conclusions of a report on the feasibility of the Winter Olympics. The chairman of the Future Host Commission for the Winter Olympics, Karl Stoss, presented these preliminary conclusions from two studies. They had a proposal for the 141e IOC meeting. The EC confirmed that the cities of Shanghai and Budapest were selected to host the Olympic Qualifier Series, a new festival event that combines sport and urban culture. The EC approved the qualification systems for cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, tobogganing, Nordic combined, ski jumping and snowboarding for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The IOC Commission approved a plan to establish two pilot regional centers Protection in sports, in southern Africa and the Pacific Islands. This is a crucial step to strengthen protection in popular sports and to provide athletes with the best possible support. This plan builds on initiatives already in place in these regions.
