European Union Minister of Roads and Highways Nitin Gadkari said Indian automakers have been advised to start manufacturing Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV) and Flex Fuel Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles to replace Indian oil imports as fuel and to offer farmers direct advantages (FFV-SHEV) according to BS-VI standard within six months.
In a series of tweets, he said that flex-fuel vehicles can run on a combination of 100% gasoline or 100% bioethanol, in line with Prime Minister Aatmanirbhar Bharat’s vision and government policy to promote ethanol as a fuel for transport and their mixtures as well as with a powerful hybrid electrical technology in the case of FFV-RWA.
Gadkari said the move would significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from well-to-wheel vehicles and help India deliver on its pledge made at COP26 to cut planned total carbon emissions of 1 billion tons by 2030.
The government allows various alternative fuels to be used to avoid fossil fuels. To accelerate the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles, the Production Linked Incentive System (PLI) included automotive components and automotive components of flex-fuel engines. After acknowledging the solid foundations of the Ethanol Blending Program (EBP), the NITI Aayog formulated the roadmap for the ethanol blend for the period 2020-2025.

In addition, in accordance with the initiatives of the Prime Minister, who put three E-100 ethanol pumps into operation in Pune on the occasion of World Environment Day, and the regulations of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), which stipulate that in addition to conventional fuels, the approved Agencies install facilities that enable the commercialization of at least one alternative fuel of the new generation, namely compressed natural gas (CNG), biofuels, liquefied natural gas (LNG), charging stations for electric vehicles, etc., taking into account the various legal directives, must take immediate action to introduce Flex fuel motor vehicles are taken. It is expected that higher proportions of ethanol will be blended with gasoline in the next five years, which will require the availability of flexible vehicles.
