Netflix is canceling Meghan Markle’s animated series Pearl

Netflix Inc said Sunday it has decided to halt work on Meghan Markle’s animated family series Pearl as the streaming platform edits its animated content.

Netflix has decided to halt development of several projects, including Meghan’s series, as part of its strategic decisions about creating animated series, the company said in a statement, without giving further details about its decisions.

Archewell Productions, the company founded by Meghan and her husband Prince Harry and officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced last year that Meghan would executive produce Pearl. The series was to focus on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who draws inspiration from a variety of influential women in history.

Archewell Productions did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Netflix has also decided to discontinue two children’s animated series, Dino Daycare and Boons and Curses.

The decision to cancel those shows came after Netflix reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter, falling well short of its forecast of 2.5 million new subscribers.

However, Netflix confirmed that the company will continue to work on a number of projects with Archewell Productions, including the previously announced Heart of Invictus documentary series. The series focuses on athletes competing in the 2022 Invictus Games for Injured Veterans in The Hague.

Netflix didn’t respond to a question about whether it will cut more animated shows.
