Netflix CEO in India intervenes with Thakur. IT rules on

Netflix Chairman and CEO Reed Hastings, who is currently visiting India, met with Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur and other senior government officials on Tuesday. According to government sources, the newly introduced IT rules were among the topics of discussion.

“Good discussion with Mr. Reed Hastings (Co-Founder and CEO Netflix). Today, content consumers travel the world through stories; India offers a wide range of possibilities and ideas – in several languages. I presented the Bhagwat Gita to Mr. Hastings, ”Thakur posted on Instagram.

The rules for information technology (broker guidelines and code of ethics for digital media, 2021) have for the first time included digital media and outstanding platforms such as Netflix, Hotstar and Amazon Prime within their scope. These rules have established a three-tier regulatory mechanism headed by an inter-ministerial committee made up of secretaries from the central government. In the first stage, the platforms must appoint an internal compliance officer who decides on a complaint against content published by the platform. The second stage demands that associations founded by such platforms form a supervisory body. A complainant who is dissatisfied with the decision of the first stage can turn to such an office.

Hastings’ visit to India came just months after Netflix announced that its first “full live-action, full-service post-production facility” in the world would open in Mumbai next year. “To be fully operational by June 2022, the facility will have 40 offline editing rooms designed as a flexible, collaborative and inspiring environment for showrunners, directors, editors and sound designers to create their best work,” said Netflix.

Los Gatos, California-based online video streaming company invested Rs 3,000 crore in Indian programming in 2019 and 2020 and announced 41 new titles this March. “We launched NetFX last year, a platform that enables several Indian artists to work on VFX (visual effects) for titles around the world. We are investing in the latest technology and skills development through multiple certifications and training workshops in post production, script writing and other aspects of creative production, ”it says.
