Muzumdar remains Mumbai coach

Amol Muzumdar will remain in charge of Mumbai senior team next season.

Under Muzumdar, Mumbai reached the Ranji Trophy final in the 2021/22 season, losing to Madhya Pradesh.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) – made up of former Indian players Jatin Paranjpe (Chairman), Nilesh Kulkarni and Vinod Kambli – met a few days ago to propose coaches for the various Mumbai teams for the next season to appoint. The CIC felt that a young team under former Mumbai player Muzumdar had done well and it would be wise if they continued to nurture the young players under him. “The CIC decision was communicated to Apex Council members today and we will adopt it at our next meeting. The Mumbai team did really well under Muzumdar and with so many young players on the team, MCA also wanted him to develop the next generation of players,” said an MCA official.

The CIC also appointed former left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar to coach Mumbai U25 side for the upcoming season. Mumbai clinched the U25 national title under his stewardship last year and CIC felt there was no reason for change.

Amitabh Velaskar will continue to coach the Mumbai U19 side while Sandeep Dahad has been appointed as the coach of the Mumbai U16 side. Last year the Indian board could only organize senior, U25 and U19 matches due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the BCCI had already decided to align their entire national calendar as in the pre-Covid days, including U16 games.

Dinesh Lad, school coach to Indian team captain Rohit Sharma, has been appointed U14 manager.

The CIC also appointed Sandesh Kawle as coach of the senior women’s team, while Ajay Kadam was appointed coach of the under-19 team.
