VIVA – “This country is not a banana republic! This country is a great country!” said Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan in response to a call from Tesla officials regarding Tesla’s investments in Indonesia in late March.
Indeed, Luhut was upset by the discourse surrounding Tesla’s investments in Indonesia. After India previously canceled, preferring to build an electric car factory in Asia.
At the 2022 Business Marching Forum on the Closing of Domestic Product Shopping Closing Ceremony held on March 24, 2022, Luhut gave an ultimatum to Tesla, who recently contacted him and wanted to close another investment deal in Indonesia.
Luhut also told Tesla that two years ago he promised to develop lithium batteries in Indonesia. However, the plan was canceled because the company was seen as overly dictating.
“I said, ‘Hey you, two years ago you called me about making a lithium battery.’ They all want to dictate, I’m like, ‘Hey, you can’t. It’s different today. We must be equal’. can’t do that anymore. This country is not a banana republic! This country is a great country!” Luhut’s story.
According to Luhut, Indonesia currently already has business agreements with electric vehicle battery manufacturers from China and South Korea, namely CATL and LG.
In addition, Indonesia is scheduled to start producing lithium batteries in 2024. Luhut reminded that if Tesla wants to get involved, the company must meet the conditions set by the Indonesian government.
