Badminton News: Two-time defending champions Kento Momota from Japan decided on Wednesday (December 7th) to withdraw from the BWF World Championships starting on Sunday after failing to recover from a back injury.

“The BWF can confirm the unfortunate news that the number 2 in the world rankings and reigning champion in men’s singles, Kento Momota, has been withdrawn due to injury,” the world association said in a statement.

“Momota has also withdrawn from the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2021 due to a back problem and has returned to Japan.”

27-year-old Kento Momota has finished his Group A opening game against Lakshya Sen from India at the BWF World Tour Finals in Bali, Indonesia, after sustaining a back injury during training.

“I’m so sorry for my fans for ending like this,” he said.

Momota, who has contested six events since the BWF World Tour resumed after the break of the COVID-19 pandemic, resigned against his compatriot Kanta Tsuneyama in the semi-finals of the FrenchOPen due to an injury and loses all of his ranking points.

He had complained that he was “very, very tired” after losing in the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open.

The Malaysian seventh seed Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying, silver medalists in mixed doubles at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, also retired from the World Championships after deciding to part ways after a fruitful 13-year partnership.

“The Malaysian seventh seed Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying announced their separation as a couple after 13 years on Monday and also withdrew from the World Cup,” said the BWF.

The World Cup will take place on Sunday in Huelva, Spain.

“The majority of the players have now safely arrived in Huelva and entered the tournament bubble. The first half games start on Sunday at 10 a.m. local time. A recall is currently not planned, ”the BWF continues.
