Karnataka High Court directs Badminton Association of India to frame guidelines for sanctioning tournaments

The Karnataka High Court has directed the Badminton Association of India (BAI) to frame guidelines for acceptance of applications and approval of tournaments in consultation with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Although the court refused to accept the BAI’s claim that there was no provision in its statutes for receiving applications from private entities for the approval of tournaments, it pointed out that the BWF’s regulations prohibit the consideration of applications for the organization of tournaments Tournaments provided by the facilities.

Justice R. Devdas gave the order while hearing on Bitsport Pvt. submitted petitions. Ltd., the organizer of the Grand Prix Badminton League, and some badminton coaches and referees. The petitioners had questioned the action of the BAI denying the league and warning the players and coaches who are members of the BAI against participating in the “unauthorized” league.

The court said that in the proposed guidelines, care should be taken to make provisions to allow unseeded players and/or players ranked below 50 in the international tournament to participate in such tournaments, which is in the interest of the sport and many such Players who aspire to this would compete at international level. The court set a deadline of six months for the development and publication of the guidelines.

Top 50 players

The court pointed out that the BWF regulations specifically refer to the top 50 players and are intended to ensure their participation in the national and international tournaments recognized or organized by the BFW through the pre-planning of these tournaments. The court explained that other players who are either not on the ranking list or not placed will be taken into account. Those ranked in the top 50 cannot be excluded from participating in tournaments other than those recognized and organized by the BWF or the member associations .

The court said that the BWF regulations for the admission of these players, who are either unranked or under 50, provided for the possibility of making applications and obtaining sanctions for holding tournaments. Of course, when inviting high-ranking players to such tournaments, the event calendar already planned by the BWF must also be taken into account in order to avoid a collision, said the court.
