Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar: “Surrogacy Act was like putting the cart in front of the horse”

Our country has long waited for the legislation on assisted reproductive technology…. So it is at least commendable that the Hon. Minister and Government put this bill forward, even though the surrogacy bill was like putting the cart in front of the horse. It has been brought here before. Surrogacy cannot take place unless in vitro fertilization occurs. So we brought the cart; now we bring the horse.

What I want to say is this. I fully agree with Mr Karti (Chidambaram) here regarding the exclusion of single parents, transgender people and LGBT couples of this age; they should be brought. You also have a right to become parents….

Before we go into the draft law, I would like to comment on the procedure for my part. This is because the process is very important to this bill today. As Dr. (Heena) Gavit said ovarian hyperstimulation could occur. Ovarian overstimulation is a deadly disease. It’s not about gynecology. Sometimes an IVF laboratory is confused with a pathology laboratory. It has nothing in common … A pathologist doesn’t know anything about IVF …

It’s a very humble moment for me. I am the first transvaginal ultrasound sonologist in this country…. Darling. The minister should think about the things I talked about. This invoice needs to be changed…. It needs to be audited and the board needs to be staffed with people who are knowledgeable about the topic. But banks need to be done away with entirely unless it is tied to an IVF lab staffed with people who know the subject…. If a pathologist has been working on IVF for 30 years, say hello. If a gynecologist has worked on IVF for 30 years, welcome them. Otherwise, not every gynecologist is an IVF specialist because it is not taught in the MBBS or MD curriculum….
