ISL: Mumbai City starts its title defense in style with the win against FC Goa | Football news

MARGAO: Spanish striker Igor Angulo scored twice within three minutes when Mumbai City FC started their Indian Super League title defense in style with a 3-0 win over FC Goa.
Angulo picked up where he left off last season with a good game, albeit against his former side when he scored in the 33rd (penalty) and 36th minutes to give Mumbai City FC a win.
The Brazilian Ygor Catatau (76.) then made his ISL debut within minutes of stepping on the pitch and ended the game for the City Football Group club at the season opener.
Des Buckingham showed Mumbai City’s summer commitments in his first game as head coach on Indian soil.
Apuia, Mohammad Nawaz, Rahul Bheke and Cassio Gabriel all started together with Angulo. FC Goa’s replacement for Angulo, Airam Cabrera, led the line for the Gaurs. Brandon Fernandes was not available due to injury.
There was drama early on when Leander D’Cunha was dismissed for a possible foul in the box following a fall by Vignesh Dakshinamurthy. The Mumbai City full-back had to be replaced in pain.
The game started after the half-hour cooling break. Gabriel got a flank with Ivan Gonzalez, who wanted to clear up. He got himself between the ball and the Goa player and Ivan’s improper tackle resulted in a penalty kick.
Angulo turned the spot kick with glee, beating old teammate Dheeraj Singh who otherwise had a decent night.
Minutes later, it was time for Raynier Fernandes to switch providers. A sharp turn in midfield led to the play-through for Angulo. The Spaniard made skilful contact with the ball, stormed past the defenders and shot hard as the ball went into the net to Dheeraj’s right.
Mumbai City could have scored a third goal before the break, only Raynier’s shot was blocked off the crossbar. Big money newcomer Apuia controlled the midfield with ease.
Goa head coach Juan Ferrando went to his bench in the second half in Nongdamba Naorem. Captain Edu Bedia almost halved the deficit with a half volley shot that went over the bar.
Cassio Gabriel was the star of the second half with his diligent attacks in the FC Goa penalty area. Ygor Catatau then came off the bench and nodded with an Ahmed Jahouh free kick that sealed the deal.
