ISL: Chennaiyin move up 2-1 against Odisha to third place in the table | Football news

VASCO: Former champions Chennaiyin FC returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Odisha FC in the Indian Super League at Tilak Maidan Stadium on Saturday.
Germanpreet Singh opened the first goal with his first goal in the ISL.
Mirlan Murzaev scored the 2-0 in the second half with a brilliant long-range shot when the team coached by Božidar Bandovic advanced to third place on the points table, tied with second-placed Jamshedpur FC and four behind leaders Mumbai City FC.
Odisha succumbed to his second straight defeat, dropping to fifth place with nine points from six games. Chennaiyin has 11 points from six games. Javi Hernandez scored a great goal but it wasn’t enough in the end.
Both teams tried to wipe each other out in the opening games and it was a hesitant proposition before Chennaiyin got ahead with an unlikely source.
Germanpreet scored a goal after six years when he shot a rebound after Odisha keeper Kamaljit Singh blocked a cross from the right that fell on Germanpreet.
It was the 25-year-old’s first goal since 2015 when he scored for Dempo against Royal Wahingdoh.
Despite a 0-1 deficit, Odisha Chennaiyin continued to have a tough time but failed to find the end of the net and also added up front.
It was end-to-end stuff from the beginning of the second period. Lallianzuala Chhangte got a golden opportunity to double Chennaiyin’s lead when he was one on one with Kamaljit, who narrowed the angle and stifled Chhangte’s efforts.
Five minutes later, Aridai Suarez fired a ferocious long-ranger who shot off the post and went for the kick. Aridai came close again, but his attempt went over the bar.
At the other end, Chennaiyin doubled its lead thanks to Murzaev’s solo performance. The 31-year-old Kyrgyz footballer was unmarked and made the most of it with a long-range shot that shot past a falling Kamaljit and crashed into the net.
It could have been 3-0 for Chennaiyin after Vladimir Koman was hacked down in the penalty area, but Lukasz Gikiewicz saw his attempt saved by Kamaljit. Javi Hernandez scored in stoppage time, but it was too little too late and Chennaiyin picked up the three important points.
