Indian hockey teams withdraw from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham

Indian hockey teams are officially withdrawing from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, citing the Covid 19 situation in Great Britain and the mandatory 10-day quarantine rule for Indians, among other things.

Hockey India named England the hardest hit country in Europe and released a statement stating that their priority is the Asian Games, which is the continental qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

While the Commonwealth Games are to take place in Birmingham from July 28th to August 8th, there are only 32 days left until the Asian Games from September 10th in Hangzhou, China.

In its letter to the President of the Indian Olympic Federation, Narinder Batra, the sports federation requested that the organizers be notified in advance. “It is important to mention that due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, England has issued guidelines requiring a 10-day quarantine for Indian arrivals in England, including fully vaccinated ones, as the Indian vaccinations are unfortunately not yet recognized by the English Government.

“Such discriminatory restrictions were not placed on Indian athletes and officials during the recent Tokyo Olympics, and this 10-day quarantine for vaccinated athletes will affect their performance. We believe that these restrictions are biased against India and we consider this very unfortunate, ”stated the letter signed by the President of Hockey India, Gyanendro Ningombam.

After a well-deserved break after the Olympic success in Tokyo, the Indian ice hockey players resumed training in Bengaluru on Monday. According to a press release issued by SAI, all COVID-related protocols in the warehouse were strictly followed. All players and supervisors have undergone a rapid antigen test (RAT) and remain in separate rooms according to the quarantine rule.
