Badminton News: India beat Finland 4-1 in the last group game of the Sudirman Cup badminton tournament on Wednesday (29th) night in the quarter-finals.
The mixed doubles MR Arjun / Ashwini Ponnappa defeated the Finnish duo Anton Kaisti / Jenny Nystrom 21: 9, 21:14, before Kidambi Srikanth / Malvika Bansod outdid their opponents in the men’s and women’s singles.
Srikanth defeated Kalle Koljonen 16-21, 21-14 and 21-11, while Malvika beat Nella Nyqvist by 21-16 and 21-11.
But in women’s doubles, men’s doubles Arjun / Dhruv Kapila lost to Kaisti / Jesper Paul 20-22 and 19-22, before Tanisha Crasto / Rutaparna Panda beat Mathilda Lindholm / Jesper Paul 21-12 and 21-13 in women’s doubles.
India compete without a star player and ended their chances of qualifying for the knockout round after a devastating 5-0 loss to strong China on Monday.
India had previously lost the Group A opening match against Thailand.
The absence of two-time Olympic champion PV Sindhu, London Olympic third-placed Saina Nehwal, and men’s doubles Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy spoiled the Hindustan team’s prospects as the team put down a miserable run to the tournament.
PV Sindhu, who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics some time ago, sent a letter to the Badminton India Federation (BAI) not to participate in the biennial championship for health reasons.
On the one hand, the former number 1 in the world, Saina Nehwal, withdrew from the championship because he was not fit enough, considering that the player is also a politician.
