India and Indonesia swap terms of office of G20 president; New Delhi will lead the grouping in 2023

India and Indonesia exchanged leaders G20, New Delhi will now lead the regrouping of the world’s largest economies by 2023.

India was to become President of the G20 in 2022, the 75th year of its independence. He has sought a swap with Italy, which will become president in 2022 and has agreed to take over the presidency in 2021.

The declaration adopted on Sunday at the end of the G20 summit reads: “We look forward to our next meeting in Italy 2021, Indonesia 2022, India 2023 and Brazil 2024”.

Although no official reason for the sudden change was known, people familiar with the development said, on condition of anonymity, that the order of the rotating presidency of the G20 between members was determined by mutual consultation and convenience.

“India hopes to move the G20 agenda forward in 2023 after the Italian and Indonesian presidencies,” said one of the above.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said at a virtual press conference that his country had talked about exchanges with India as the G20 presidency will span the presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in 2023.

“Indonesia has been discussing exchanging our G20 presidential mandate with India, and luckily India has the same intent to lead the bloc in 2023,” Marsudi said.

Instead of India, Indonesia will join the G20 “Troika” in 2021 together with Saudi Arabia and Italy. The Troika is a transition mechanism that ensures that future presidents follow the vision of the previous presidency.

During the 2018 G20 summit in Argentina, India requested an exchange with Italy so that he could become president of the group on the 75th anniversary of independence in 2022.
