Government’s attempt to expand free meals system points to economic hardship: Congress | India News

NEW DELHI: The congress On Sunday, the government announced its decision to extend it free rationing another five years is an indication of the continued high levels of economic hardship and growing inequalities in the country.
Secretary General of the Congress Jairam Ramesh also blamed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to change his position on this issue.
“His recent announcement is an indication of continued high levels of economic hardship and growing inequalities. For the vast majority of Indians, incomes have not grown in line with the soaring prices of essential goods,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
He said the Prime Minister announced that the Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) will be extended for another five years.
As Chief Minister of Gujarat, he consistently opposed the National Food Security Act (NFSA) passed by Parliament in September 2013, the Congress leader claimed.
Ramesh said the PMGKY is none other than the NFSA, which already covers 80 million Indians.
“Of course, this is not the only example of a U-turn he has made. He was also forced to change his position on MGNREGA, which proved life-saving during the pandemic,” he claimed.
Addressing a rally in Durg on Saturday, Modi had said the government would extend the free food scheme for 80 million poor people for five years.
