GAVI welcomes India’s move to resume export of Covid vaccines

GAVI, a global coronavirus vaccine alliance, welcomed India’s move to resume exports to the rest of the world.

We welcome news reports that India will resume exports of Covid-19 vaccines to the rest of the world, said a spokesman for GAVI, as quoted by ANI news agency.

“This could have an immensely positive impact on health security both within India and around the world,” said the spokesman.

GAVI had previously criticized India and Serum for prioritizing their own needs over the rest of the world despite delivery commitments.

Our priority right now is to work with the Government of India and the Indian Serum Institute to understand the implications for our delivery schedule as we strive to protect as many vulnerable people as possible from Covid-19, the spokesman added.

GAVI works with Covax, a WHO-led initiative to distribute vaccines fairly to poorer countries.

After the government cut exports for over a year due to supply shortages, the government announced on Monday that India will resume exporting and donating surplus vaccines from next month.

The move was seen in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States, where the issue will likely be raised by President Joe Biden.
