TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Factory iPhoneFoxconn near Chennai, southern India, closed this week after protests sparked by a food poisoning incident among its employees. “Five days off have been announced at the factory,” a Kancheepuram police inspector told Reuters on Tuesday, December 21, 2021.
Police in India On Monday, December 20, 2021, dozens of people were released who blocked a major highway in protest last week after the food poisoning incident at the factory that makes the iPhone 12. 150 employees had to be hospitalized as a result of the poisoning.
“Factory workers and their relatives have blocked the road that connects Chennai with India’s technology center in Bengaluru,” a police officer told Reuters on Monday.
The news of the factory closure was also confirmed by a senior official from Tamil Nadu state, whose capital is Chennai.

India is among those countries like Mexico and Vietnam that have become critical for contract manufacturers supplying US brands as they seek to reduce reliance on China amid mounting Sino-US tensions. Foxconn and Apple did not comment on the incident, however.
The Foxconn uprising is the second in a year to involve an Apple supplier factory in India. Last December, thousands of contract workers at a factory owned by Apple supplier Wistron destroyed equipment and vehicles for non-payment of wages, causing an estimated $ 60 million damage.
