FIH Junior World Championship: Defending champions India beat Belgium 1-0 in thriller to play against Germany in semifinals, sports news

Defending champions India will overtake Belgium in Bhubaneshwar in the semi-finals of the 2021 FIH Junior Hockey World Championship in Bhubaneshwar on Wednesday.

Sharda Nand Tiwari’s goal in the 21st minute was the only difference between the two teams at Kalinga Stadium.

India will now face six-time champions Germany in the semi-finals. While Argentina will play against France, the latter will cross past Malaysia to move into the final 4.

As expected, the game started quickly, but remained fairly low-key for most of the first quarter. The European side started dominating as they dominated possession, but India grew into the game as the quarter progressed.

In the second quarter, Sanjay did the trick for the hosts when he won the penalty corner after storming down from the right.

India’s colts, who were PC-tested throughout the tournament, made sure they grabbed the big chance in the game when Sanjay came up with a variation that worked perfectly.

He faked a drag flick and rounded it off for Sharda Nand Tiwari, who shot him past the Belgian goalkeeper.

In the tense final fifteen minutes, Indian goalkeeper Pawan did an excellent job of keeping his nerve as he put down two big moments on the Belgian PC to ensure the hosts play Germany against SF.
