Expert calls China-India’s health program JKN-KIS BPJS Eyeing

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Health insurance expert from the University of Indonesia, Prof. Budi Hidayat, values the performance of BPJS Health, which is still active before the age of nine.

He said the JKN-KIS program is a social health insurance company with the largest number of participants in the world. Several countries are said to be interested in introducing BPJS Health-style health services to be implemented in their respective countries.

“The implementation of the fast-growing JKN-KIS program has even led China and India to look at the pattern of health insurance in Indonesia,” he said in the media workshop webinar “Maintaining the Sustainability of the JKN-KIS Program” organized by BPJS Kesehatan, Friday (29/10).

According to him, the presence of the JKN-KIS program of BPJS Kesehatan brings many positive effects to the people of Indonesia.

Budi stated that under current conditions, the Social Security Fund (DJS) surplus condition is expected to be maintained through 2024 if the government continues to adhere to government-set health care tariffs and fees.

However, to maintain the sustainability of the long-term financial funding of the JKN-KIS program, at least four systemic solutions were required that could be implemented by the government, BPJS Health and related parties.

“That is, by controlling abnormal usage, streamlining service rates, setting ideal rates, and streamlining membership management,” he said.

Official data says that as of September 30, 2021, the number of JKN-KIS participants will be 226.3 million people, or about 83% of the total population of Indonesia. This shows that BPJS Kesehatan’s move towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is getting closer.

Quality improvement

Meanwhile, David Bangun, director of expansion and services for BPJS Health Participants, said that the growth of JKN-HIS participants must go hand-in-hand with improvements in service quality and participant satisfaction.

The 2020 survey shows that 8 out of 10 JKN-KIS participants are satisfied with the BPJS health services.

David said his party continues to optimize digital services in various ways. Regarding membership services, BPJS Kesehatan provides administrative management services, information fulfillment and complaints through the JKN Mobile Application.

His party introduced an online system in health services such as online queues in health facilities, bed displays, surgical displays, online doctor consultations and so on.

“We’re also making it easier for attendees to pay JKN-KIS contributions cashlessly via direct debit, bank and non-bank, JKN cadres and others,” said David.

Meanwhile, Muttaqien, a member of the National Social Security Council, said the JKN-KIS program is approaching and reaching the entire population of Indonesia. In order to achieve the goal of protecting 98 percent of the Indonesian population in the JKN-KIS program by 2024, a systematic and measurable strategic plan is required.
