Delhi Fog: Dense fog covers the city and drastically reduces visibility; Flight operations affected

Fog Update for Delhi: A blanket of dense fog enveloped Delhi in the early hours of Tuesday, drastically reducing visibility. The situation is said to be the same in the nearby states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said very dense and dense fog conditions were observed in isolated areas of Punjab, Haryana, northwest Rajasthan, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, Bihar and Odisha. Moderate fog was observed in parts of western Uttar Pradesh.

At 5:30 am on Tuesday, visibility was reduced to 25 m in Amritsar and Patiala in Punjab, Ambala in Haryana, Ganganagar in Rajasthan and Varanasi in UP.

In Delhi's Palam and Safdarjung, UP's Gorakhpur and Bihar's Purnea, visibility was just 50 m. Parts of Delhi like Janpath Road, Aruna Asaf Ali Mark and Nirankari Colony were covered in a thick blanket of fog on Tuesday.

According to IMD, the minimum temperature in Delhi is expected to be around 8 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature is expected to remain around 22 degrees Celsius.

Haryana's Hissar, UP's Bareilly, Lucknow and Sultanpur, Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior and Bihar's Bhagalpur also had limited visibility of less than 500 m.

Delhi Airport confirmed that flight operations will be affected due to dense fog conditions. All passengers have been asked to contact airlines for up-to-date information. “While landings and take-offs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may be affected. Passengers are asked to contact the airline concerned for current information. We deeply regret any inconvenience caused,” it said on social media.

Due to the limited visibility, many trains were also delayed. Mumbai Rajdhani was one hour late while Bangalore Rajdhani was more than two hours late.

The air quality in Delhi was in the “very poor” category with an AQI of 328.
