CWG 2022 Day 3 LIVE: Srihari Nataraj Qualifies for 50m Backstroke Final

Day three of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will see more medal opportunities for India, who won their first set gold, silver and bronze on day two of the event courtesy of the weightlifting contingent.

Mirabai Chanu won the first gold for India while Sanket Sargar took the first medal, it also came in Weigjlifting but he missed out on gold by just a kg of weight. Later, Bindayrani Daevi took another silver while Gururaja Poojary took bronze, giving the Indian team four medals in total.

The Indian contingent would now attempt to build on this on the fourth day i.e. Sunday 31st July 2022. Jeremy Lalrinnunga will lead the Weightlifting Challenge for India, while Poppy Hazarika will compete in the 59kg women’s weightlifting category. Young army cadet Achintia Sheuli of Bengal will be the last Indian in contention for a weightlifting medal tonight.

India women’s cricket team meets arch-rivals Pakistan. Having suffered a narrow three-wicket loss to Australia in the opening game, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side would look to win that game and keep their podium hopes alive.

The Indian men’s hockey team would also open their account tonight where they will take on Minnows Ghana. Goals are expected to rain down from Olympic bronze medalists in India.

The Indian pugilists will also be in action tonight. After last night’s shock defeat of Sanjeet, no Indian boxer would try to take another player lightly. Reigning World Champion Nikhat Zareen will fight her first fight of the competition while Shiva Thapa would be fighting for a place in the Quarterfinals. Later in the evening two more Indians will also have their matches in Sagar and Sumit around 01:00 IST.

After a shock quarter-final elimination for the Indian women’s table tennis team, the Indian men’s team, also holders of the title, do not want to take Bangladesh lightly in the quarter-finals. Speaking of quarterfinals, the Indian badminton mixed team would play South Africa. So far they are undefeated in their three group games.

Continuing the fourth quarter talk, India’s top squash medal contenders Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa would also play their round of 16 matches tonight. Aside from these big games, the Indians will also compete in swimming, lawn bowl, and cycling.
