Climate change, 40 degree Celsius heatwave hits India

NEW DELHI, – North India experienced more than a dozen heat waves in March and the Indian Meteorological Institute (IMD) expects the unseasonably hot weather to continue into April.

This previously rare severe heatwave is now an annual event in India.

In 2022, India’s heatwave started early. IMD said the first heatwave in India occurred on March 11 and has been severe several times since then.

IMD declares a heat wave when maximum temperatures reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in areas of low elevation. Heat waves are also taken into account when temperatures are at least 4.5 degrees above the normal temperature average.

According to the IMD, a severe heat wave is declared when the temperature deviates from normal by more than 6.4 degrees DW (3/31/2022).

India’s northwestern state of Gujarat is hardest hit.

Several parts of the state experienced an 11-day heatwave in March. Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir – considered to be India’s colder regions – have also experienced heatwaves.

explained R. Krishnan, senior climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology DWalthough such heatwaves have occurred before, they now appear to be stronger and longer lasting.

“There is a rise in temperature in an area for a few days and then it goes back to normal. But what we’ve seen in recent years is that heat waves are increasing in both frequency and severity,” Krishnan said.

India will also experience other unusual weather conditions in 2022.

The coastal city of Mumbai has experienced an unusual heatwave this year, with dust storms blowing across the Arabian Sea towards Mumbai in January and February from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In March, two subtropical depressions also formed in the oceans around India, which are rare at the beginning of the year.
