The Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Sunday pushed for a 50 percent reservation for women in court. Addressing the Supreme Court’s female lawyers, the presiding judge said, “We need 50 percent restraint for women in court … It’s a problem that has been around for thousands of years. Less than 30 percent of judges at lower levels of the court are female. At the high courts it is 11.5 percent. Only 11 to 12 percent of Supreme Court justices are women. “

It is about women’s rights and they have the right to submit reservations to courts and law schools.

Earlier this month, Ramana expressed concern about the low number of women in the judiciary, stating that the Supreme Court had “made an enormous effort” to achieve a pathetic 11% quota of women in its bench. There are four women among the 33 serving justices at the Supreme Court.

The CJI stated that after 75 years of independence, women would be expected to have at least 50 percent representation at all levels and stressed that the majority of female lawyers within the profession face challenges. He added that very few women were represented at the highest levels; even then, they still face significant obstacles.

He stated that after 75 years of independence, women should be represented at least 50% at all levels. He said, “With a tremendous effort, we have finally achieved a meager 11% women on the Supreme Court bench.” He said that while certain jurisdictions may be better represented because of the reservation legislation, the fact is that the legal profession still “needs to welcome women into their circles”.

Judges Indira Banerjee, Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna and Bela M Trivedi are now serving on the Supreme Court. History was made at the Supreme Court on August 31 when nine judges, including three women, took their oath of office for the first time at the same time.

Of the 34 sanctioned members, the Supreme Court currently has 33 members, including the CJI. In September 2027, Judge Nagarathna becomes India’s first female chief judge.
