Chirag / Satwik withdraw from the Sudirman Cup 2021 –

Badminton News: India’s best men’s doubles, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, have withdrawn from the mixed team championship of the Sudirman Cup 2021 for health reasons.

Number 10 in the world rankings is part of the 12-person Indian team announced by the Badminton Association of India for the prestigious event in Finland from September 26th to October 3rd.

“Chirag and Satwik withdrew on medical grounds because the former was ill,” a BAI source told PTI.

“It is also uncertain whether they will take part in the Thomas Cup, which will be played after the Sudirman Cup. It depends on whether Chirag has recovered from his illness.”

The nature of the disease cannot be determined as neither Chirag nor Satwik answered the call.

The Thomas and Uber Cup will take place October 9-17 in Aarhus, Denmark.

Tokyo Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, citing post-Olympics recovery, has asked not to be considered for the two team championships.

The Sudirman Cup will be the first BWF tournament this year since the world governing body was forced to cancel or postpone a number of events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the absence of Chirag / Satwik, the responsibility rests with Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun, who were the top-placed doubles pair in the selection process to win India’s men’s doubles in the tournament, which consists of two singles and three doubles matches.

The squad also includes Kidambi Srikanth, B Sai Praneeth, the women’s doubles Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy as well as young players such as Malvika Bansod, Aditi Bhatt, Tanisha Crasto and Rutuparna Panda.

In the tournament, which takes place every two years, Indian teams in Group A meet defending champions China, Thailand and hosts Finland.
