China BRICS Summit 2022

For two days the Indian press has been making headlines about the summit of the BRICS, the group of the world’s 5 largest developing countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The BRICS, 5 countries but more than a third of the world’s population

They represent 41% of the world’s population, 24% of world GDP and 16% of world trade. The summit will be hosted by China in virtual mode and will be themed “Promoting a quality partnership between the BRICS, ushering in a new era for global development“.

During Wednesday night’s opening ceremony, Narendra Modi highlighted the role of BRICS in the economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, presenting India as a strong economic partner and destination for investments in a variety of areas including technology, innovation and start-ups.

Vladimir Putin said negotiations are underway to open Indian chain stores in Russia. He also added that Russian oil exports to India have seen a noticeable increase.

Xi Jinping said sanctions would politicize and militarize the economy.

Jair Bolsonaro only spoke about his country’s achievements.

The Indian and international press did not endorse the South African President’s statement.
