Bengaluru Open: Ramkumar recovers to defeat Janvier | Tennis News

BENGALURU: India's Ramkumar Ramanathan found his mojo at the right time on the opening day of the Bengaluru Open Challenger tennis tournament at the KSLTA Stadium here on Monday. In the tenth game against Frenchman Maxime Janvier, the 29-year-old lost a set and was 0:40 behind. In the round of 32, the 29-year-old saved three match points and achieved a 6:7 (4:7), 7:5, 6-4 victory in two hours and 26 minutes.

Ramkumar got off to a decent start in the first set and defeated Janvier 3-1 in the fourth game. But the Frenchman recovered with some sharp groundstrokes to make it 4-4 before the players prepared for the tie-break at 6-6. The Indian took a 4-1 lead in the tie-breaker but allowed his opponent to win six points in the run, giving him a crucial 1-0 lead.

Both players were impressive in their service games in the second set, winning points especially with their first serves. Ramkumar suffered what appeared to be his first setback in the tenth game as Janvier was just one point away from a place in the next round. But the resolute Indian recovered and won the game, breaking his opponent in the 11th round and drawing level with Janvier on serve.

With momentum on his side, Ramkumar took a 3-1 lead in the final set before clinching the game in style.

In the adjacent field, third-seeded Croatian Duje Ajdukovic lost to Tunisian Moez Echargui 2:6, 4:6.
