Bangladesh: India and Bangladesh explore collaboration on AI, cybersecurity and startups

India and Bangladesh decided on Sunday to expand their strategic partnership to develop cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, start-ups and fintech, alongside expanding ties in the rail sector and cross-border river management and protection.

This was decided on Sunday evening at the 7th meeting of the Joint Consultative Commission between the two foreign ministers S Jaishankar and AK Abdul Momen.

In his opening remarks, Jaishankar said, “…we now look forward to working with you to expand our connections into new areas – artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, startups, fintech. We were pleased to receive your Minister of ICT Good visit from your Minister of Railways recently and I look forward to expanding our cooperation in developing our railway system. We share 54 rivers. Comprehensive management of our rivers and their conservation, as well as shared responsibility for the environment , which we have in particular Sundarbans – these are really areas where we need to work together as part of our commitment to climate change.”

Border management was also an important item on the cooperation agenda. “…better management of our long border is also a key priority. Our border guards are committed to fighting cross-border crime. We must continue to work together to ensure the border remains crime-free,” Jaishankar said of his remarks.

Sub-regional cooperation in the field of energy, particularly hydropower, was also on the JCC agenda. “We are both the largest producer and the largest consumer of energy in the region. And we would be very happy to work with Bangladesh to build progressive partnership in production, transmission and trade,” Jaishankar stressed.

Momen’s visit is also significant because Bangladesh is among a group of Muslim-majority countries that have not issued a statement or summoned the Indian envoy to the Prophet over the BJP spokesman’s statements. The JCC was held after two years.
