Technology companies are usually dominated by global corporations. One of them is a Muslim businessman from India, Azim Hashim Premji.

Azim Premji is widely known as a Muslim billionaire who likes to donate his wealth to charity. According to Forbes, his fortune amounts to 12 billion US dollars or the equivalent of 187 trillion IDR (exchange rate 15,621 IDR).

Azim Premji is ranked 164th on the list of the richest people in the world. He will be the 17th richest person in India in 2023.

In detikcom's notes, quoted from Investopedia, the wealthy man was born on July 24, 1945. He was born into a wealthy family after Azim Premji completed school in Mumbai and then pursued his studies in electrical engineering at Stanford University in the United States (USA) in 1966.

However, Azim Premji had to drop out of college because his father died and he had to return to India. At the age of 21, Azim Premji must become the successor to his father, Mohamed Premji's company.

The company is Western Indian Plant Products Ltd. Azim Premji was able to develop the company and expand his business into hydraulic cylinders, soap and lighting products.

This company was also the forerunner of Azim Premji, who started a company in the technology sector under the banner of Wipro Limited.

Azim Premji entered the field of information technology in 1980. His company began developing microcomputers based on a technology sharing agreement with Sentinel Computers, based in the United States.

Business conditions continued to improve, particularly in the 1990s. After the deregulation of the Indian economy in 1991, Wipro Limited further diversified into manufacturing everything from lighting, medical and diagnostic equipment to IT hardware such as printers and scanners.

Wipro's revenue grew from around $2 million in the late 1960s to around $7 billion in 2014, with information technology accounting for around 75% of total revenue.

According to Forbes, Azim Premji resigned as CEO of Wipro Limited in July 2019 and was replaced by his son Rishad. Azim Premji remains the founding chairman, also known as the founder of the company.

Well, he is not just into business, Azim Premji loves to share. He has even pledged $21 billion of his fortune to the Giving Pledge, a commitment by the world's richest person to donate the majority of his wealth to charity.

The amount includes two-thirds of his Wipro shares deposited in a separate trust. He also founded the Azim Premji Foundation in 2001 as a non-profit organization with the aim of improving basic education in India.

In 2020, the Azim Premji Foundation committed $150 million to help those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Converted to rupiah at the current exchange rate, the amount amounts to IDR 2.3 trillion.

In the Islamic religion itself, any property or maintenance from Allah is someone else's right. So any wealth or surplus wealth should be given in the form of alms, Zakat or Infaq. Therefore, it is believed that sharing one's happiness also opens the door to future happiness.
