Assam’s vernacular foray into the medical science curriculum | Guwahati News

GUWAHATI: The government of Assam held the fifth General Council meeting of the Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences on Sunday, at which the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the University, Himanta Biswa Sarma, at the State Secretariat here.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr. Dhrubajyoti Borah, was entrusted with the task of taking the initiative for the national language medical sciences curriculum as the General Council discussed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal to develop medical sciences curriculum in national languages.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said that after extensive discussion, the General Council made several important decisions aimed at strengthening the academic environment and establishing a robust governance mechanism at the university. At the meeting, CM Sarma emphasized the need for a permanent university campus in order to streamline the way it works. He asked the VC and the chief engineer PWD (Health and Education) to ensure that the initial process for the construction of the administrative building with a perimeter wall of the university on the land made available by the government for the purpose in Baihata Chariali would be completed soon with it the administrative and basic scientific activities can be carried out from the campus within two years.
Other important decisions of the meeting are the digitization of certain services of the university, the introduction of a three-stage fellowship program, i.e. Senior Fellowship (PG level), Fellowship (diploma level) and Special Fellowship (dental, nursing, etc. courses), Appropriate control regulations of the medical universities to ensure best practices and quality services, a uniform course of study for all medical universities operating under the university and a unique identification number for students and faculties.
The CM also urged the university to focus on research that can be translated “laboratory to field” for the benefit of the general public.
State Health and Family Minister Keshab Mahanta, Education Advisor Nani Gopal Mahanta, Chief Secretary of CM, Samir Kumar Sinha, Chief Secretary (Health), Anurag Goel, Chief Secretary (Education), B. Kalyan Chakravarthy and Director of Medical Education, Assam, Dr. Anup Kumar Barman among other government officials attended the meeting.
