A promising evening | Latest News India

While the focus was on Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulating top national athletes who represented the country at the Asian Games, another event took place later in the evening.

It was held at Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s house where both he and his lovely wife Lakshmi were the hosts. Lakshmi Puri is a former diplomat.

After her husband’s appointment as a Union minister in 2017, she quit her job at the United Nations, where she was working at the time. Some six years later, she seems content to take care of her home, which she runs like a dream.

Those who know the Puris confirm that they are a wonderful, made-for-each-other couple. They open their home to their friends and the expansive lawns provide the perfect setting for an evening of fun, food and music.

Last evening was one of those at Puris House in Lutyens Delhi, complete with Indian and Chinese cuisine and lots of faluda kulfi and crispy, piping hot jalebis.

It was truly heartwarming and had the personal touch that is often missing from formal events.

When Puri’s colleague, Union Minister Anurag Thakur, spoke of Puri being a “perfect host”, he had summed it up.

Thakur also said that the Puri ministry is always “a step ahead” of the sports ministry in sporting events.

Apart from this, Thakur said his ministry will support sportspersons and help them progress like never before: “Bahut aage jaana hai,” to quote him.

Thakur is the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports and Information and Broadcasting.

Aside from the visuals, there was an atmosphere of optimism, self-confidence, a sense of belonging and belief among the athletes. There was also, so to speak, a departure from the norm of neglect in the past.

Under the current regulations, it is important for the person to be an athlete, regardless of achievements or coveted medals. The focus shifts from cricket to other sports, including athletics. And there is reassurance that the government will stand by its players regardless of discipline.

The proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the food. And what could be better than the Prime Minister spending time with athletes? And two Union ministers broke bread with them on a memorable evening.

There are memories that the young players will take with them; Memories that they will live with and cherish for a long time. Imagine a 15-year-old facing the country’s prime minister? Imagine if he was asked to speak on stage while two Union ministers were all ears?

Yes, Puri, on his part, had ensured that some of the athletes shared their experiences on stage along with congratulations. And they did.

Apart from the fact that they were proud to represent India, it was clear to see the support and encouragement they had received from the government. Each of them emphasized that the government had made a special effort to help them achieve this goal.

As expected, both Union Ministers, Puri and Thakur, spoke about the Prime Minister’s immense contribution to the promotion of sports in the country. Talking about Khelo India’s initiative, Thakur said oil companies will continue to support aspiring sportspersons.

At this point, a question needs to be answered: What has changed under the current regime? How did sport come to the fore? What was and isn’t?

The answer is best summed up in what Puri said: infrastructure.

True, because the athletes have confirmed that the facilities are better and the coaches more responsive: a departure from the days when, to quote shooter Abhinav Bindra, “India struggled not to finish last”.

We’ve come a long way from there to an envious winning streak.

Indian athletes have certainly grown up thanks to their courage and determination, but also thanks to the support of the government. The two now work together.

“To say that hand-holding is nullifying the government’s mammoth efforts,” says Manjusha, head of sports, Indian Oil Corporation, “There is a sea change. Now athletes can appeal to the highest officials without having to wait days to hear from even the lowest level. That made a big difference. The Target Olympic Podium Scheme or TOPS has given athletes a huge boost to the top. We have reached a stage where athletes can fully focus on improving their skills without worrying about facilities and finances,” she told Hindustan Times.

TOPS is an initiative by the Ministry of Sports to establish a technical support team to support and support athletes and equip them to win medals at the Olympic Games.

Critics will inevitably dismiss this as tokenism, but to its credit the Modi government is doing the “little things” that big governments often fail to do.

Simply put, it is the human touch, the effort to reach out to everyone and tell everyone who represents India in one field or another that they are valued and appreciated. Add to that the record haul of 107 medals and the journey seems to have just begun.
