5.6 magnitude earthquake hits Aceh this morning

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – earthquake A magnitude of 5.6 shook the Aceh Jaya region today Sunday 31 July 2022 at 10:03:16 WIB.

BMKG data found that the earthquake was centered at 4.25N latitude, 95.70E longitude (44 km SE of CALANG-ACEHJAYA).

The depth of the epicenter was 56 km. Although the earthquake was large, the BMKG said it had the potential for a tsunami.

Aceh was once struck by a major earthquake that caused a tsunami and claimed many lives.

The 2004 Aceh earthquake occurred at 07:58:53 WIB on Sunday 26 December 2004 and had its epicenter off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The tremor of the earthquake was 9.1–9.3 on the moment magnitude scale and IX on the Mercalli intensity scale.

The 30 m high tsunami waves killed 230,000-280,000 people in 14 countries and inundated a number of coastal settlements. This earthquake and tsunami are among the deadliest natural disasters in history. Indonesia is the hardest hit country along with Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.

It is the third strongest earthquake ever recorded by a seismograph and the longest disturbance duration in history (between 8.3 and 10 minutes).

This earthquake shook the entire planet Earth by 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) and triggered seismic activity in various regions including Alaska.

The epicenter is between the islands of Simeulue and Sumatra. This event is known among researchers as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake.
